Rule of Space
According to Tony Northrup’s DSLR Book: How to Create Stunning Digital Photography, another rule to pay attention to is the Rule of Space. According to this rule it is important to give my subject room for movement. For instance if the subject is not looking straight forward then you want to leave room to prevent the picture from feeling to crowded.
This is the same image, just cropped slightly different.

Rule of Space - Crowded
As you can see the beak of the flamingo is right up next to the edge of the image. This makes it feel like there just isn’t enough room and maybe the beak is a bit bent because it ran into the edge!
Rule Of Space Room To Look
In this version there is plenty of room for the flamingo to move.
